Cheryl McHenry Biography

Cheryl McHenry is an American anchor and reporter at WHIO-TV serving as an anchor. She has been working for the station since joining in August 1981.

Cheryl McHenry Education

McHenry began her elementary education at St. Helen’s in Riverside, formerly known as Mad Rive Twp, and later transferred to Carroll High School. She attended the University of Cincinnati, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcasting. She went to WKRC Radio for an internship after receiving her broadcasting degree, where she applied her college learnings and gained valuable experience.

Cheryl McHenry Career

McHenry serves as an anchor at WHIO-TV. On joining the station, she enclosed the Dayton Police/Montgomery County Courts beat and other stories that struck in the 1980s. She started off her career at WKRC Radio where she interned which was the training ground for most TV journalists back in the day. McHenry, later on, started working at WCKY based in Cincinnati and WING in Dayton where she served as an anchor and reporter.  She left the two stations in 1981 and started working at WHIO-TV.

McHenry has also managed to win several awards and honors including four regional Emmy Awards. Three of these Emmy awards were given to her for enclosing the police search for a teenager who was abducted by her mother’s killer. She was awarded an Emmy Award in 1990 for her Investigative Reporting about drunk driving offenders. In 2013, she won two Emmy Awards for half-hour specials that she had produced alongside her co-workers.

McHenry has also been honored by the Ohio Associated Press as Best Anchor. In addition to that, she was also honored by the Society of Professional Journalists as Best Anchor. She is also an active member of the Ohio Valley Silver Circle which was presented by the National Academy of Television Arts and Science. She was also inducted into the Carroll High School’s Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame, the Radio/TV Broadcasters Hall of Fame of Ohio, and the Dayton Area Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

McHenry also co-hosted the Children’s Miracle Network Telethon from 1987 through 2014 which raised money for Dayton Children’s Hospital. In addition to that, she has also emceed in several community events including the Dayton Defense Education Gala, the United Way Big Thanks volunteer breakfast and the Hundred Club. She has also worked alongside Ken Jefferson, Jim Baldridge, and  James Brown.
