Damon Singleton Biography

Damon Singleton is an American meteorologist working for WDSU News in New Orleans, LA. The New Orleanian native is a proud graduate of St. Augustine High School. He received his degree in Meteorology from the University Of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas. He then got his Master’s Degree from the United States Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.

Singleton is a Surface Warfare Officer, and a 22-year veteran of the U.S. Navy. He has traveled the world as a crew member aboard the USS CORAL SEA (CV 43), an Engineering Officer on USS CONSTELLATION (CV 64), the Operations Officer on USS MOUNT HOOD (AE 29), the Navigator and Electrical Officer on the USS MERRILL (DD 976), and Executive Officer of USS LASALLE (AGF 3).

During his career, Singleton participated in EARNEST WILL Escort Operations of reflagged Kuwaiti Tankers; Operation SOUTHERN WATCH enforcing the no-fly zone over Southern Iraq; Operation PRAYING MANTIS, President Reagan’s measured response to the Iranian mining of the USS SAMUEL B ROBERTS; Operation RESTORE HOPE in Mogadishu, Somalia; and Operation JOINT GUARD supporting Joint Task Force SILVER WAKE operations in the former Yugoslavia among others.

He spent a good portion of his career tracking weather across the Indian and Pacific Oceans, adjusting his ship’s track on many occasions to avoid severe weather and tropical cyclones, and formulating ocean temperature versus pressure gradients used to determine the most effective way to utilize sonar systems to detect submarines.
