Don Schwenneker Biography

Don Schwenneker is an American meteorologist currently working for ABC 11 since 2011. You can catch him on the Eyewitness News, at 4 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 11 p.m. newscasts. Also, you can catch him on CW22 at 10 p.m. 

Before coming to Durham, North Carolina to work for ABC 11, he was working for WBBM-TV, as a meteorologist. Schwenneker began his career over 2 decades ago, where he was working for KBIM-TV in Roswell, New Mexico. There he worked as a lead forecaster. He also worked for WTAJ-TV in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh.

Two Associated Press Awards were honored to Schwenneker for being the best forecaster, by ABC11. He holds a Seal of Approval from the National Weather Association. The American Meteorological Society also awarded him the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist seal.

He was nicknamed “Big Weather” by a colleague, for 2 funny reasons. The first reason was that he is one of the taller meteorologists on television, having a height of 6feet. The second reason was that he was always on television during the warning of big weather events(from tornadoes to flooding).

For 7 years, Schwenneker has been a volunteer firefighter in Pennsylvania. Schwenneker’s public service of fire fighting includes dispatching for Fire, EMS, and Police, as well as national certification as a 911 call-dispatcher/taker. He is also a certified first responder & rescue technician.
