WIBW-TV was the third television station in Kansas to sign on, and the first in the Topeka area. Channel 13 began broadcasting on November 15, 1953 and is Kansas’ second-oldest surviving television station (behind KWCH, as KCTY ceased operations in 1954) The station began broadcasting from studios near the Menninger Clinic on 6th Street and Wanamaker Road in west Topeka, where it shared space with co-owned WIBW radio (AM 580) On January 5, 2012, a fire seriously destroyed the plant, which was later abandoned. WIBW-TV is one of the few television stations west of the Mississippi River with call letters that start with the letter “W.”
WIBW radio was founded in 1925 in Logansport, Indiana, and operated as a portable station for much of 1926 before moving to Topeka in 1927 under Capper’s sponsorship. Capper Publications amalgamated with Stauffer Publications, the publisher of the Topeka State Journal, in 1957. In 1966, the station was the first in Topeka to transmit color television.
