Fredricka Whitfield is an American and award-winning broadcast journalist and news anchor working as the weekend edition of CNN Newsroom from CNN’s world headquarters in Atlanta. She joined CNN in 2002.

Whitfield went to Paint Branch High School where she attained her high school diploma in 1983. She, later on, joined Howard University where she attained her bachelor’s degree in journalism. During her time in college, she worked at the campus radio station WHUR serving as a news anchor.

Whitfield serves as an anchor at CNN/U.S. and anchors the network’s weekend edition. Since starting her career, she has reported on quite a number of stories including the 2000 Bush-Gore presidential race and recount, the Afghanistan War, the Cuban-Haitian refugee crisis in the 90s, and the start of the second Iraq War. She also covered the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act in Selma Alabama, the 2008 Inauguration of President Barack Obama, the Presidential primary races and National Conventions, and the Beijing, Atlanta, and London Olympic Games. In addition to that, she also enclosed several international and domestic stories one of them being Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Whitfield previously worked at NBC News where she served as a correspondent based in Atlanta for The Today Show, NBC Nightly News, and Dateline NBC. Prior to NBC, she worked at WPLG-TV in Miami where she served as an anchor and reporter. She previously worked at News Channel 8 in Washington, D.C. where she served as the evening anchor. Prior to her tenure at News Channel 8, she worked at KTVT-TV in Dallas and WTNH in New Haven, Conn where she served as a general assignment reporter. She started her journalism career at WCIV in Charleston, S.C. where she served as a reporter as well as a morning anchor.

In 2004, she was among CNN’s news team who won Alfred I. DuPont Award for enclosing the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia.
Whitfield won a George Peabody award in 2005 for enclosing Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. That same year, she also won an Ebony Award for Outstanding Women in Communications and Marketing. In 2007, she received an Emmy Award for covering LIVE of a breaking news story long form. She was also nominated for an NAACP Image Award in 2017 for hosting a Talk or News/Information Series. In 2019, she has tagged a 60th Anniversary Honorary Board Member of Alvin Ailey Dance Theater.
