Tokumatsu then joined KCRA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Sacramento, as a general assignment reporter prior to joining NBC4. He hosted and produced Perceptions, a quarterly documentary-style Asian public affairs program. Tokumatsu was the only person in 1992, to provide live coverage of Hurricane Iniki from Hawaii for all satellite news networks. His reports aired on the NBC News Channel and other networks around the world.

Tokumatsu joined NBC4 in 1993, as the anchor and general assignment reporter. He has covered a number of high-profile news stories such as the one about an LAPD officer who ticketed an elderly woman for moving too slowly in a crosswalk. The story sparked national interest and was covered by various media outlets. He was the first to reveal the identities of 2 men arrested in the deadly 1997 North Hollywood bank robbery/shoot-out and the first to report on the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office’s controversial cornea harvesting. Tokumatsu also reported on the tragic Oklahoma City bombing and the Northridge earthquake in 1994.
