Grant McOmie is an American journalist and author who is a show host at KGW in Portland, Oregon, specializing in outdoor reporting. McOmie is a teacher who writes and produces stories and special programs about the people, places, outdoor activities, and environmental issues of the Pacific Northwest.

McOmie attended and graduated from Pacific University in Forest Grove. He then attended and graduated in Journalism, English, and Speech Communications at the University of Washington and the University of Portland (Master of Arts). McOmie is an adjunct instructor in the Media Arts Department at Pacific University.

McOmie started his broadcast career at KGW in 1981 and then worked at other stations in Seattle and Portland. In 2008, he returned to KGW. While McOmie has had a varied career reporting and producing topical and timely environmental news stories, features, and documentary programs, it’s been the exploration of the Pacific Northwest back roads and byways that he has enjoyed the most.

He has received significant awards for his work, including numerous Emmy Awards from the National Academy of Television Arts. Grant shares the distinct honor of the Edward R. Murrow Award for News Coverage from the Radio-Television News Directors Association, as well as many Oregon Associated Press and Oregon Association of Broadcasters news awards over the past three decades. His popular getaway segment has been a broadcast fixture in Portland since 1988.

McOmie has also written about his travels and adventures in a series of books. Grant’s latest, ” “Grant’s Getaways: Oregon Adventures with the Kids” offers many outdoor activities across Oregon that will engage any kid, from archery to clamming on the coast to hunting for thundereggs to zip-lining through trees in an aerial adventure park.
