Ian Leonard Biography
Ian Leonard is an American meteorologist working for FOX 9/KMSP-TV in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He joined the station in 2006 and serves as a Chief Meteorologist.

Prior to joining the FOX 9 Weather team, he worked for KWWL-TV in Waterloo, Iowa. During his working time there, he served the station as a chief meteorologist for three years from 2003 to 2006. He also served at CFRN-TV in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. While there, he worked as a chief meteorologist for 13 years from 1990 to 2003.
Apart from his career job, he works tirelessly for the 8,000-plus athletes of Special Olympics Minnesota all year long. He works with his Bad Pants Open Golf Tournament in the fall and with the annual Polar Plunge in the winter. In the past 14 years, he has helped raise over $20 million for Special Olympics Minnesota through it and he does not plan to stop anytime soon.

He is a cancer survivor, finished the Lake Placid Ironman 140.6, and learned to empty the dishwasher at home. He lost a part of his lower lip due to squamous cell cancer and underwent topical chemotherapy on his entire face. The topical chemotherapy is to ensure the skin cancer doesn’t come back.
In 2016, he was diagnosed with squamous cell skin cancer. On his Facebook page, he told his viewers what was going on with him, “Hello my friends, I want to let you know that I will be off the air for the next few weeks. Many of you know that about 6 months ago I lost a third of my bottom lip to skin cancer. Now that the surgeries have completely healed the second part of my journey begins. I am undergoing topical chemotherapy on my entire face to ensure that skin cancer stays in my past and does not interfere with my plans of growing old with the woman I love and watching my amazing daughters grow up. In the meantime, I will get lots of rest, read loads of books, watch my friends on FOX 9 News, and have time to help my daughters with homework!”
