John Ahrens Biography
John Ahrens is an American meteorologist working for WSOC as the chief meteorologist since 2024. He joined the station in September 2006 as a meteorologist and has served the station for more than a decade. Previously, he worked for WCBD in Charleston as a meteorologist for 3 years.
John Ahrens Education
Ahrens joined Kent State University in 1995 when he finished his high school education. In 1999, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism.

Ahrens took his viewers through many tornadoes, ice storms, and baseball-sized hail events. In 2002, the American Meteorological Society gave him its Seal Of Approval. He was granted AMS’ Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) Seal Of Approval in 2009.

According to wbtv.com, Ahrens was in the Mecklenburg County Jail for a while after he was charged with violating a domestic violence protective order filed by his estranged wife, Sobrina Driver, in 2015. Before that, he was charged with a misdemeanor attack on a female and spent two nights in jail.
Sobrina had him arrested when he threw rocks at her when she went to pick up their daughter as part of their custody agreement. She said that one of the rocks hit her above the eye, leading to two stitches. She then procured a protective order that banned him from contacting or seeing their daughter until his court appearance. Ahrens denied the charges against him.
