John Burchfield Biography
John Burchfield is an American meteorologist working for WTOL as a broadcast meteorologist since joining the station in June 2019. Previously, he worked as a meteorologist for WPTA ABC21 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
John Burchfield Education
Burchfield joined Cornell University in 2012 when he finished his high school education. In 2016, he graduated with a Bachelor Of Science degree in Meteorology and Atmospheric Science. In college, he was involved with the Cornell Chapter of the American Meteorological Society, the Phi Sigma Kappa, the Cornell Symphony Orchestra, and High Rise Community Hall Council Treasurer.
During college, he worked as a fill-in meteorologist for WENY in Elmira, New York. There, he produced weather and forecast maps and graphics using WSI Fusion. Further, he delivered live broadcasts at 5:30, 6, and 11 to viewers in southern New York and northern Pennsylvania.
Burchfield interned at WTOL 11, collaborating with broadcast meteorologists in the production of weather forecasts for northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. He also worked as a broadcast meteorologist at Ithaca College Television. In this role, he produced detailed short and long-term weather forecasts for Tompkins County and broadcasted the weather live on Thursdays at 7 and 10 p.m.

Burchfield works for WTOL as a broadcast meteorologist. The Toledo native is happy to deliver forecasts at the station he grew up watching. He fell in love with the weather when he was young, with winter weather, severe storms, and temperature swings of northwest Ohio capturing his interest.
Burchfield used to watch WTOL 11 for weather updates when he was a young aspiring meteorologist. He got the chance to tour the WTOL 11 studio while in high school, where he met some of his future co-workers. Further, he went to a summer weather camp at Penn State University, constructing a tornado simulation chamber for a science research project.
Using his childhood role models as inspiration, Burchfield created a green screen in his basement and uploaded local weather forecasts to YouTube. After graduating high school, he secured his first on-air gig as a meteorologist for ABC21 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
