Jeff Smith Biography

Jeff Smith is an American journalist who has been working for WTOL as an anchor on weeknights on WTOL 11 News at 5, 6, and 11 since joining the station in December 2020. Previously, he served WTVG-TV / 13 ABC ACTION NEWS as a morning/noon news anchor, reporter, producer, and host for 22 years.

Smith joined Indiana University-Bloomington in 1991, when he finished his studies at St. Francis de Sales High School. In 1995, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism. There, he was involved with the Ernie Pyle School of Journalism and Sigma Chi Fraternity. He then joined Bowling Green State University, where he received a Master’s degree in Strategic Communication in 2020.

Further, he taught at Bowling Green State University. He launched his journalism career in 1995, where he served WPBN/WTOM in northern Michigan for two years. He was a bureau reporter in Gaylord, Michigan, accountable for 500 square miles stretching from Grayling, Alpena, Cheboygan, the Soo Locks all the way to Petoskey and Charlevoix. Besides working off scree, he produced, reported, photographed, and edited.

Smith, alongside three others, lived in Houston for a week to broadcast the aftereffects of Hurricane Ike. The awarded reporter has partaken in many presidential visits. He went to the Coast Guard during an 11-hour trip across a frozen Lake Michigan to provide fuel oil to a declining island. During the summer, that trip usually takes only 30 minutes.
