He graduated from Friendswood High School and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Radio/TV/Film from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. He is also a graduate of Mississippi State University’s Broadcast Meteorology program. The Houston Press Club honored John with the 2011 Lone Star Award for the FOXRAD Hurricane Briefing in Online Collaborative News Reporting.

Dawson serves as the Weekend Meteorologist for FOX 26 News. In addition to this role at the station, he also produces this multimedia.
