Jim has interviewed Presidents Reagan, Bush, Clinton, and Carter while working as a political reporter. To name a few, Hillary Clinton, Al Gore, Jack Kemp, John Glenn, Newt Gingrich, Bob Dole, George Stephanopoulos, Geraldine Ferraro, and Jessie Jackson. He once confronted William Rehnquist, then Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, when the justice barred broadcast media from covering an event but allowed print reporters to do so.
The Chief Justice seemed amused that this skinny kid from Georgia had the audacity to question the country’s most powerful jurist. He even responded to Jim’s question by explaining that cameras were prohibited because he didn’t like the way he looked at them. Jim began his broadcasting career at the age of 16 when a teacher arranged an interview with a local radio station, stating, “Anyone who talks as much as you should get paid for it.”
He was hired as the “occasional fill-in, weekend guy” and went on to become one of the country’s youngest radio station General Managers. Once in the newsroom, he quickly rose through the ranks, eventually becoming the News Director & Anchor.
Jim moved across the country to be the main anchor at a CBS affiliate in Idaho after working for NBC and an ABC affiliate in Georgia.De La Vega is a frequent public speaker and master of ceremonies, and he says he’s always willing to lend a hand to a worthy cause. He, in addition to his interest in news, is a prolific author who spends much of his spare time writing novels.
