She then worked for National Basketball Association as a Writer/Editor — Publishing Ventures and Communications Group from 1997 to 1999. There, she authored feature articles for commemorative magazines and NBA-branded publications, including Inside Stuff and Hoop magazines. There, she was responsible for news coverage of six municipalities for the daily Neighbours section and uncovered unique stories about people and places in Southeastern Pennsylvania, among others. From 1992 to 1993, she was an Intern Reporter at Dallas Morning News where she produced feature and news stories for Metropolitan and Education Extra sections. Nelson has three Lone Star Emmys and earned a Gracie Award for the prestigious national organization, The Alliance for Women in Media.
Also, she has multiple awards from the National Association of Black Journalists and has been honored severally by local organizations for both her work as a Journalist and her contributions to the North Texas community. She donated a kidney to her mother in August 2011 and documented the process in a multiple-part series called “Kristi’s Gift” which aired on NBC 5 the week of the surgery. The series earned her an Emmy.
