Lanie Pope Biography

Lanie Pope is an American Emmy award-winning meteorologist working at WXII 12 where she serves as the chief meteorologist. She joined the WXII 12 team as Chief Meteorologist in September 2001. 

She attended the University of South Carolina, where she graduated with a major in broadcast journalism. Lanie also studied at Mississippi State University where she graduated with a degree in broadcast meteorology. The American Meteorological Society awarded her their Certificate of broadcast meteorology and the National Weather Association certified her as a broadcaster. In addition, she began her career at WPDE in Florence, South Carolina, and later on, she worked at WSOC in Charlotte, WCNC, and at WLKY in Louisville, Kentucky

While serving as a meteorologist, she has been honored with many awards such as two regional Emmy Awards for covering Hurricane Bonnie in 1999, and the 2018 Greensboro tornado. For covering tornadoes from 1998, 1999, and 2000, she won three North Carolina Associated Press awards, and for her coverage of Hurricane Floyd, she won an award from the Radio Television Digital News Association.

Lanie was also honored as one of the cities of Winston-Salem’s Outstanding Women Leaders in April 2017. In addition, she has been active in the community by serving in many ways  such as  volunteering her time with greeNest and with Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina

Furthermore, she serves in the soup kitchen and as the honorary chair for the annual Penny Campaign fundraiser while working with Samaritan Ministries. She also serves on the board of directors for Moji Coffee and many other organizations.

Pope is also passionate about ending Alzheimer’s disease, this was after she lost her mom to the illness while she was 66-year-old and she serves on the Alzheimer’s Association of Western North Carolina board. During her leisure time, she enjoys spending ample time with her family while they; play sports, ride bicycles, hike, camp, watch sports and attend sporting events. She also cheers for the Los Angeles Rams, Arsenal FC, and the Washington Nationals.
