Carson began her TV career in 1964 in Atlanta where she served Channel 11 as a “TV Weather Girl.” Despite being told that it would be a short career since women couldn’t be accepted on TV after their 30s, she went on to become one of the first female TV reporters and one of the first prime-time female anchors in the state. Moreover, she’s still reporting the news at ABC7 while she’s still in her 70s.
During her time on the Suncoast, Carson has been at the forefront of news. She was in the elementary classroom at Emma E. Booker Elementary School during the Sept. 11th terrorist attacks and walked with President George Bush to the media center at the school where he addressed the Nation and discussed the attack. She followed the story the next day when the world found out that the terrorists had taken their flying lessons in the region.
The Associated Press awarded her for her interview of death row Serial Killer, Danny Rolling. She witnessed his execution and reported live from Starke prison when he was killed for the murders. While reporting in Atlanta in the 60s, she broadcasted the Civil Rights Movement, concentrating on Coretta Scott King, and spent much time with the couple before Dr. King’s death, and with Mrs. King afterwards.
Carson worked as an assistant sports director at KDKA and as a nightly weathercaster and reporter at WMAR in Baltimore. Following her time in Baltimore, she joined WDAF in Kansas City as an anchor and consumer reporter. Further, she worked as a consumer reporter at WFSB in Hartford and was a medical and consumer reporter at WKYC-TV in Cleveland.
Carson worked in Philadelphia as a weathercaster at Fox 29. She also co-anchored a pre-game show for the Eagles dubbed “Eagles Game Day Live.” Besides journalism, she serves on the Board of Directors of The Circus Arts Conservatory and volunteers for Tidwell Hospice. She previously worked on the Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society and the Alzheimer’s Association.
Carson directs the “Bud Carson Scholarship Fund” which grants scholarships to an outstanding defensive football player on the Suncoast annually. She works as a member of the Sarasota Sailing Squadron and was the Secretary of the “Luffing Lassies” which comprises of highly competitive female pram sailors.
