WOC-TV was the first station to sign on as KWQC-TV on October 31, 1949. B. J. Palmer, the founder of the Palmer College of Chiropractic, launched the station. Because of WOC radio’s long-standing association with the network, it has always been a key NBC affiliate. To avoid confusion, channel 6’s call letters were changed to KWQc-TV in 1986.
On January 27, 2016, Media General stated that the Meredith transaction would be terminated and that it would be acquired by Nexstar Broadcasting Group. To comply with FCC ownership regulations, the corporation had to sell either KWQC or WHBF to another company. Nexstar announced on June 3, 2017, that it would preserve its existing assets while selling KWqC to Gray Television for $270 million. It’s a bit of a reunion because Gray used to manage the station while Young was having financial issues, but this time he bought it outright.
