Matt O’Donnell Biography

Matt O’Donnell is an American News Anchor working for 6abc where he is the co-anchor of Action News Mornings, and co-host of the Sunday political show Inside Story. Asides from this, he is the host and producer of the True Philadelphia Podcast. 

 Matt O’Donnell Career

O’Donnell joined Action News in December of 1996 as a general assignment reporter, achieving a career dream to work at the station he grew up watching. In his career, O’Donnell has interviewed two presidents (President Obama and President Trump), covered three political conventions (St. Paul and two in Philadelphia), and covered countless pivotal stories that have shaped our region over the last two decades.

He started his career in New York just days after graduating from the University of Delaware. Matt worked at WICZ-TV in Binghamton where he served as a do-it-yourself news reporter covering local news and politics – including the 1994 New York governor’s race where he interviewed George Pataki, the eventual winner, twice. He then went to WSTM-TV in Syracuse, New York.

His big break was when he was called back to Philadelphia to join the Action News team, where he has worked ever since. Shortly after 9/11, O’Donnell joined the Air Force National Guard on a trip to England. O’Donnell flew supersonic with a member of the Blue Angels over Atlantic City. In his career, he has interviewed Barack Obama, Bernie Sanders, Sarah Palin, John McCain, Hillary Clinton, and Donald Trump when their presidential campaigns brought them to the region.

He stayed for two days along the Jersey Shore awaiting the arrival of Hurricane Irene, which almost became the first hurricane to hit New Jersey in more than 100 years. When Kevin Bacon, Naomi Judd, Morgan Freeman, and James Brown visited the town, O’Donnell had a chance to greet them.

Every weekday morning, he joins Tamala Edwards, David Murphy, and Karen Rogers from 4-7 am to help the sleepyheads of the Delaware and Lehigh Valleys wake up, a news anchor position he has held since 2004. Tam and O’Donnell also alternate as hosts of Inside Story where they engage panelists to debate the important issues we face and challenge newsmakers who make the decisions. During his free time, O’Donnell plays drums in a local rock band and competes in a number of local golf tournaments. He hopes to be the first reporter to do a live shot from Mars.
