Nick Bender Biography
Nick Bender is an American Meteorologist working for KMBC 9 News in Kansas City where he serves the station as a Morning Meteorologist/Storm Chaser. He is a proud recipient of multiple National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Regional Emmy Awards.
Nick Bender Career
Bender works with KMBC 9 News where he serves the station as a Storm Chaser and Morning Meteorologist. Nick is a proud graduate of The Pennsylvania State University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Meteorology. He is no stranger to the Plains as he has worked in some of the most challenging weather markets in the country. Prior to moving to Kansas City, he had held several positions at KWTV in Oklahoma City and KOTC in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and KVII in Amarillo, Texas.
In his career, he has been able to experience the full force of Mother Nature’s wrath: mile-wide tornadoes, inundating floods, destructive wildfires, damaging earthquakes, historic blizzards, and paralyzing dust storms. The year 2010 saw him working as part of the largest and most ambitious scientific field experiment in history, VORTEX2. This was in order to help further the understanding of tornado formation and increase tornado warning time.
He has also been able to track and relay life-saving information from SkyNews9 during the May 24, 2011, tornado outbreak. This was as he watched a mile-wide, EF5 tornado tear a path of destruction perilously close to the towns of El Reno and Piedmont Oklahoma. Oklahoma’s severe weather season of the year 2013 saw unprecedented tornado outbreaks. In the violent 12-Day stretch, an EF5 tornado also devastates the town of Moore, Oklahoma. Asides from this, a record-setting 2.6-mile-wide EF3 tornado scoured the land mere miles west of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area.
His reporting from StormTracker9 on the devastating March 6th, 2017 Oak Grove tornado gave residents the only live images of the EF3 Twister before it barreled through their town. It was fortunate enough that there were no fatalities. Together with his team, they won a Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for their breaking news coverage of the tornado.
