Paul Cicala Biography

Paul Cicala is an American anchor/reporter working for KVOA as a weekend sports anchor. He joined  KVOA in 2016, as a sports anchor, after previously working as a news anchor. 

Prior to relocating to Tucson, he worked in Las Cruces, New Mexico; El Paso, Texas; and Juarez, Mexico area, as a sports director and special assignment reporter. While he was in Juarez, Mexico area, he received multiple Emmy nominations for his news and sports reporting. He was also awarded his second Edward R. Murrow award for a three-part series report he did in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, and in Medellin, Colombia. In addition, he made a good impression such that he was voted the 2013 El Paso area’s Best Newscaster Under The Age Of 40, on the borderland.

However, his true love is sports, which led him back to the Old Pueblo where he covered The U of A which he grew up cheering for. He left his job as a news reporter and relocated to Tucson in 2006, to work at News 4 as a Sports Director in Southern California. In addition, he has also served as a Spanish field reporter for the area’s Telemundo affiliate. Over the years, Paul has made stops including in Las Vegas, where he was a sports anchor and reporter, and in Yuma, Arizona. While Paul was in Las Vegas, he had the opportunity to cover a number of the biggest boxing matches in recent history.

He was able to secure his first television job at FOX Sports in Los Angeles, while he still studied at the University of Southern California. Later on, he preceded to NBC Network News in Burbank where he served as a producer and while he was there, he has the opportunity to travel and cover stories all throughout Mexico and the US. In addition, Cicala’s work in the news industry secured him a job on national TV shows, and in 2004, he was honored to be a guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Furthermore, has an equally active life outside of news, as he is a teacher at Sunnyside and Desert View High School, a Rotary Ambassador of Goodwill in Mexico, and a mentor to at-risk youth on Tucson’s south side. During his spare time, he can be found playing basketball, at local gyms working out, enjoying cultural activities, and taking the quick drive south of the border to Mexico. He also volunteers with the community, especially with the Banner UMC, Special Olympics, and at many schools.
