Paul Gross Career

Gross works at Local 4 where he serves as a weekday and weekend meteorologist. Detroit is Paul’s birth home and he spent his entire life and career in southeast Michigan. Initially, he was afraid of storms however the fear transitioned to fascination after his second-grade teacher took him to the school library and pointed out a section of books that were about the weather.

He gained interest in weather the more he read about lightning and thunder and he told his family that he would become a weatherman at Channel 4 one day. He joined the University of Michigan where he studied at the Department of Atmospheric Oceanic and Space Science which is an extra-challenging curriculum as it is located in the prestigious College of Engineering.

While he was in his sophomore year, he was chosen by WDIV meteorologist Mal Sillars to be the first-ever weather intern at the station. The news director, Bob Warfield offered him a part-time, off-camera position at the station while Gross was in the middle of his senior year. In the same years, he became the on-air weekend meteorologist position at WJIM-TV in Lansing, and years later, he took the backup meteorologist position at WKBD-TV when the station began its Ten O’Clock News.

In addition, Paul worked on the air at all three television stations at the same time, and on a number of occasions he worked at 2 stations on the same day by 1986. In addition, he became popular among his peers for his passion for meteorology and he became among the youngest meteorologists to ever be chosen to serve on the American Meteorological Society’s Board of Broadcast Meteorology in 1987.

Paul was also named the chairman of the American Meteorological Society in 1990, however, his science and environmental reporting assisted him in the paradigm of broadcast meteorology. Furthermore, he began pushing producers to let him work on science stories in the early stages of his career, and ever since, he has researched, written, and produced eight half-hour documentaries for WDIV.

He also researched, wrote, and produced many scientific, historical, and environmental stories. Furthermore, he began earning Emmys and other awards and even national attention when his documentary, Forecast: Overlord was deemed so historically significant that it was added to the D-Day archives at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library, the permanent collections of the Museums of Television and Radio History in New York and Chicago, and the British Meteorological Archives.

In 2006, he was acknowledged by The American Meteorological Society (AMS) and he was selected to chair its new Committee on the Station Scientist for 7 years. In addition, Gross led the AMS national campaign that encourages and enables broadcast meteorologists to add science and environmental material to their broadcasts.

He was also named a Fellow of the Society in 2017, which is a very high honor in any professional scientific society. Paul is also among the only four meteorologists in the world who have been named Certified Consulting Meteorologist, Certified Broadcast Meteorologist, and an AMS Fellow. Among his most notable professional accomplishments happen in 1997, when he discovered that Michigan law did not require public schools to conduct tornado safety drills.

He contacted a state legislator, who accepted and introduced legislation to amend state law to require tornado safety drills. He also testified before the Senate Education Committees and the State House on the tornado threat in Michigan.

Over the years, Gross has been awarded nine Emmys by the Michigan Chapter of the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences. His 2014 forty-five-minute climate change webcast that aired on ClickOnDetroit.com was awarded by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters first place award. He also consults with the legal community in litigation involving meteorology.

Since 1986, he has been testifying in more than four dozen trials. He also follows the science of global warming carefully and on regular occasions, he gives lectures to share the scientific truth about Earth’s changing climate. During his spare time, he enjoys bowling, golf, working out, softball, yard work, and collecting coins, old stamps, meteorology books, and maps.
