Ralph Hipp Biography
Ralph Hipp is an American retired anchor who is best known for his time at WIBW-TV where he served as an evening anchor at 6 pm and 10 pm. He joined the station in April 1990 and in September 2022, he left the station for his retirement.
North Florida is his native home and he grew up watching television coverage of major news events such as the triumphs of our space program and the Kennedy assassination. Ralph worked in both radio and television for almost 45 years and half of that time, he worked at WIBW-TV. In 1971, he joined the University of Florida where he graduated in 1975, with a Bachelor of Science in broadcasting.
While he was at the University, he was part of WRUF Radio for 5 years, he ran the board for the Florida Gator football games on Saturday, spined records, and hosted his first talk show on Tuesday and Thursday nights. In addition, He was helped by a friend who worked at a radio station to secure his first job at WJXT in Jacksonville where he served as a reporter.
Later on, he relocated to WESH in Orlando where he did film reports on the opening stage of the station’s Shuttle program at Cape Canaveral. While he was in Petersburg, Virginia, he served as an evening sports anchor and even worked on the radio on the first crew opening V-100 in Topeka. Furthermore, Hipp returned to Gainesville, Florida where he secured his first official news anchoring job at WCJB-TV which was the only commercial station in town during that time.
He also worked in the Springfield/ Branson, Missouri area where he met his wife Sheila who was one of his guests on the Live at Five interview show. In April 1990, he relocated to Topeka where he joined WIBW and worked at the station till September 2022, when he went for his retirement. Whenever he found time, he enjoys going back to the basics and assisting the newer members at 13 News to begin their television careers.
