Clayton started off as a caller at Concordia University Office of Advancement from September 2012 to May 2013. He then became a promotional video creator for Concordia Athletics Department from September 2013 to September 2013. From March 2013 to May 2014, he was a writer and reporter for The Sword Newspaper. Clayton worked as a scene shop assistant for the Concordia Theatre Department from September 2012 to September 2014. He then became an intern at North Metro TV from January 2014 to April 2014, before becoming a sports crew member from May 2014 to September 2014. From May 2014 to September 2014, he worked as a production assistant for CTN Studios.

Clayton then served as a director and replay operator for Stream Powered Productions from September 2012 to October 2014. From August 2014 to January 2015, he became a sports intern at KSTP TV, before becoming a communication and broadcast intern at Concordia University Athletic Department from January 2015 to May 2015. Clayton also served as a weekend sports anchor at KHON-TV in Honolulu, from June 2018 to May 2020.

From August 2020 to October 2021, Clayton served as a play-by-play broadcaster for School Space Media. He then joined WCCO/CBS News Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota as a sports and news reporter in October 2021. He served the role until June 2023, when he was elevated to a sports anchor and reporter.
