Rex Murphy is a Canadian commentator, host, and author working for CBC News in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He hosts a nationwide call-in show, CBC Radio One’s Cross Country Checkup.
Rex Murphy Education
After earning his Diploma from High School in his hometown, he had to further his education. He joined the Memorial University of Newfoundland to pursue his career course. In 1968, he graduated with a degree in English. During the same year, he studied law for a year at St Edmund Hall, Oxford, as a Rhodes scholar. Returning to Newfoundland, he began a Master’s degree in English but did not complete it.

Murphy is a host, commentator, and author at CBC News. He serves as the regular host of CBC Radio One’s Cross Country Checkup. Murphy served there for 21 years before stepping down in September 2015. He first came to national attention while attending Memorial University during a nationally covered speech in Lennoxville, Quebec. After Smallwood warned the undergraduate student in a news conference not to return, Murphy returned and was elected President of the Memorial University Student Council. Afterward, returning to Newfoundland, he soon established himself as a quick-witted and accomplished writer, broadcaster, and teacher. Smallwood’s administration followed through with its promise; students were awarded both free tuition and an additional $50 living allowance.

Furthermore, he was the regular host of a nationwide call-in show on CBC Radio One’s Cross Country Checkup. On 20 September 2015, he retired from Cross Country Checkup and continued his commentary segments on The National until 28 June 2017. Currently, he writes for the National Post and has a YouTube channel called RexTV.
