Ron Bird is an American journalist serving as co-anchor of 2News This Morning and 2News At Noon at KUTV 2News. since joining the station in August of 1989. Ron’s career started in 1981 as an anchor/reporter at KBCI in Boise, Idaho and he also did a stint at the CBS affiliate in Fargo, North Dakota before joining the 2News team.

Bird graduated from Brigham Young University (BYU) with a degree in broadcast journalism. Since joining KUTV 2News in August 1989, Ron Bird has been a long-time anchor and reporter on the morning and noon broadcasts. Ron began his career as an anchor/reporter at KBCI in Boise, Idaho in 1981, and he previously worked for the CBS affiliate in Fargo, North Dakota before joining the 2News team.
Bird has been co-anchoring 2News This Morning and 2News At Noon for 33 years. the luckiest guy in the world,” he says, “to be able to live my dream at KUTV.” Ron grew up in Kimberly, Idaho, a small town in southern Idaho. “I knew I wanted to be a news reporter as a first grader and stayed laser-focused on that aim,” he recalls. “I grew up watching Salt Lake City news on cable TV and dreamed of working at KUTV.” After working as a youngster at an FM radio station and graduating from BYU with a degree in broadcast journalism, Ron began his TV news career in Boise, Idaho, and then briefly in Fargo, North Dakota, before landing his dream job on the morning program at KUTV.
Ron has covered many of the significant stories that have affected Utah throughout his time at KUTV. He and long-time co-anchor Mary Nickles were on the air when a tornado hit downtown Salt Lake City. When the terrorists attacked on September 11, Ron and Mary debuted KUTV’s all-day local coverage. Then, in March 2020, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck Salt Lake City as Ron and Mary were on the air. They moved into nonstop emergency coverage, which garnered them an Emmy nomination. “It’s very incredible to be on the front lines of history and share it with our devoted fans,” Ron says. “It is an honor and a responsibility that we take seriously.”
Ron is attracted not only by epic stories but also by the stories of everyday people. His “Ron on the Run” segment is an impromptu profile of people and events that don’t get much attention but make for great stories. Over the years, Ron has written on cops and crime, elections, and in-depth profiles of Utah’s modern pioneers. “One of my highlights was riding in an F-16 with the Air Force Thunderbirds,” Ron says.
Aside from news, Ron has been teaching AAU youth basketball for almost 20 years, enjoys working out at the gym, playing guitar, doing house and yard chores, and is currently trying out pickleball as a new sport. “We’ll see how that goes,” Ron replies, chuckling.
