Ron Bird Biography

Ron Bird is an American Anchor working with KUTV 2News where he serves the station as a co-anchor for This Morning and 2News At Noon. He has been working with KUTV News since August 1989.

Bird works with KUTV 2 News where he serves the station as a co-anchor. He says that he is the luckiest guy in the world to live his dream at KUTV. When he was a first grader, he wanted to be a news reporter and stayed laser-focused on that goal. He also watched Salt Lake City news cable TV and has always wanted to be working at KUTV.

After working at an FM radio station when he was a teenager, and graduating from BYU with a degree in broadcast journalism, he started his TV news career in Boise, Idaho, and then did a short stint in Fargo, North Dakota before he finally got his dream job on the morning show at KUTV. Altogether, he has 40 years worth of experience in TV News.

While he was working at KUTV, he reported on many of the major stories that have impacted Utah. He and long-time anchor, Mary Nickles were on air the moment a tornado ripped through downtown Salt Lake City. When terrorists struck on 9-11, he and Mary launched KUTV’s all-day local coverage.

March of the year 2020 saw a 5.7 magnitude earthquake rock Salt Lake while Ron and Mary were on air. They went into emergency non-stop coverage which earned them an Emmy nomination, He says that it is really amazing to be on the front row of history and share it with local viewers. For him, it is an honor and a responsibility that he doesn’t take lightly.

For him, it is not only the big stories but the stories of everyday people that he loves. His spontaneous “Ron on the Run” feature is a profile on people and events that usually don’t get much attention but really make good storytelling. Through the years, he has covered cops and crime, in-depth stories on Utah’s modern pioneers, and elections. Among his highlights, he says, was taking a ride in an F-16 with Air Force Thunderbirds.

Away from work, he has coached AAU youth basketball for more than 20 years and loves to dabble with his guitar, hit the gym, try pickleball as a new sport, and do his home and yard projects. At the age of 65, he says he has no plans of slowing down. He greatly loves his family and loves what he does and wants to stay involved with the community and the people that mean everything to him. He finishes by quoting Anchorman, Ron (Burgundy) saying “Stay Classy, Salt Lake City.”
