Steve Hensley is an American journalist working for WTMT as an anchor for First at 4 and the 6 p.m. newscasts. Additionally, he works as the managing editor and host of the Issues and Answers program on most Mondays. He joined the station in May 1999 as a reporter and co-anchor of Mountain News at 11 and has served the station for over 2 decades.

Hensley attended Eastern Kentucky University in 1995, where he finished his studies at Hazard High School. In 1999, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Broadcasting and a History minor. During college, he worked as a DJ on the campus radio station. Further, he reported and anchored for Madison County Cable News. As a high schooler, he was a member of the awarded Hazard Band of Gold. In the summer, he earned an internship at WTSP in Tampa-St. Petersburg, Florida.

One of his earliest memories was watching the assassination attempt on President Reagan’s coverage. He would watch CNN for hours and was intrigued by stories like the Gulf War. He had dreams of being a news reporter and he is happy to be living his dream. Even though he had great professors in college, his internship at WYMT prepared him for the “real world.”
Hensley’s watched WYMT while growing up, to the point of being able to name every anchor and reporter who’s worked there. During his high school junior year when he was 17, Tony Turner allowed him to intern at the station, which he did for 5 successive summers.
Two weeks after graduating college, Hensley joined WYMT full-time as a reporter and co-anchor of Mountain News at 11. In 2002, he received a promotion to 6 p.m. news anchor and started anchoring First at 4 a few years later. Aside from working with multiple wonderful journalists, he has won multiple Associated Press awards for his work.
One of his career highlights was in 2013 when he won WYMT’s initial regional Emmy award alongside Brandon Robinson for covering the 2012 tornado outbreak. He is proud of his special projects including the the 1957 flood, the 1958 Floyd County school bus crash, and the 2008 Mountain Cold Case series. In his role as news director, he led the newsroom during the pandemic and some difficult stories to cover like the July 2022 flood.

Hensley loves his job since it’s never boring and he gets to do a little bit of everything. He still misses Tony Turner, who has been a mentor and a second father to him and most of his colleagues. Despite his death, he and his coworkers try to honor him by working hard to make the station the best TV station in the mountains.
