Tamala Edwards Biography

Tamala Edwards is an American news anchor and reporter for 6abc in Philadelphia since joining the station in January of 2005. She anchors the morning news for 6abc from 4:30 am-7 am. Edwards was born in Georgia and raised in Texas. She attended Stanford University where she graduated with an honors Bachelor of Arts degree in international relations.

Edwards also regularly co-hosts Inside Story, conducting probing interviews with newsmakers like Governor Tom Corbett, Mayor Michael Nutter, Senator Bob Casey, and others, as well as moderating many election debates. Before joining 6abc, she worked as the anchor of ABC’s World News Now, and World News This Morning.

Before that, Tam was an ABC News correspondent based in the network’s Washington, D.C., bureau covering religion, education, and culture for World News Tonight and other ABC News programs. During the Iraq War, Tam was an embedded reporter moving with the Air Force from Kuwait to Nasiriyah, Iraq. In August 2001, she joined ABC News as a White House correspondent.

Prior to joining ABC, Edwards worked as a staff writer at TIME Magazine. She has covered former New Jersey Senator Bill Bradley’s campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination and during the 2000 presidential election, Edwards covered Vice President Al Gore’s campaign. In the Apollo Theatre debate in New York between Gore and Bradley, Edwards was a panelist and she as well participated in MTV’s “Choose or Lose” broadcasts.

From 1995-1997, she served as a correspondent in the Washington bureau of Times where she covered Bob Dole’s presidential campaign politics, society, and breaking news. Prior to coming to Washington in 1995, Edwards worked for two years as a Time reporter in New York covering international news.

From 1993-1995, Edwards was in New York at Time International where she covered global issues from the reclamation of an ancient Jewish text in Bosnia to an international art-world ruckus over a group of Canadian prehistoric figurines to the international expansion of MTV News.

She was awarded her first prize for her contribution to Time’s 1999 cover story, “What Makes a Good School” by The Education Writers Association. Vogue magazine named her a journalist for “The Next Establishment,” in its August 2000 issue, and she was featured in Folio magazine’s “30 Under 30” list in November 2000.
