Tim Smith Biography
Tim Smith is an American meteorologist working for KRGV as the chief meteorologist. He joined the station in December 1981 and has served the station for over 4 decades. Previously, he worked as the news director of WRBI-FM for 8 months.
Tim Smith Education
Smith joined Indiana University Bloomington in 1977 after completing his high school education. In 1981, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism. There, he was involved with the National Broadcasting Society, WQAX Campus Radio, and WIUS Campus Radio.
Smith took classes from Penn State University, the Weatherscan School of Broadcast Meteorology, and Mississippi State University. In August 2004, he finished Mississippi State’s Broadcast Meteorology Program with a 4.0 GPA.
Tim Smith Career
Smith works for KRGV as the chief meteorologist and has been part of the CHANNEL 5 NEWS team for over 40 years. The Batesville native has served multiple radio stations in Indiana before relocating to Texas in 1981. He launched his career at CHANNEL 5 NEWS, where he was a weekend weathercaster under he tutelage of the late Lee Lindsey. Quickly falling in love with the Valley’s weather, he was promoted to chief forecaster in 1983. Along the way, he continued his meteorology education, receiving a diploma that changed his title from chief forecaster to chief meteorologist.
During his time at KRGV, Smith has led the station’s weather broadcasts through tornadoes, hurricanes, freezes, and even two snowstorms. Further, he has worked as the host of KRGV’s quiz show, Masterminds, for many years. His Tim’s Coats project has helped collect over 100,000 coats for the underprivileged in the Valley over the last 4 decades. Alongside the Channel 5 Toy Drive, he and multiple members of the station have delivered Christmas gifts to all children in every hospital in the Valley during the Christmas season.
Awards
Smith has won several honors and awards for work, including multiple first-place awards from the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters. The Texas Classroom Teachers Association awarded him the Silver Apple Award. Moreover, he won the National Association of Social Workers’ Texas Media Award and the University of Texas–Pan American’s Distinguished Service Award. In 2022, Leadership McAllen granted him their Alex Longoria Leadership Award.

Smith’s work as founder and chair of A Night at the Brewseum at IMAS in McAllen made him the first member of “The Mug Club.” He was nominated as the City of Edinburg’s 2023 Hometown Hero. An Emmy Award winner, he was inducted into the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences – Lone Star Chapter Silver Circle.
Community Work
Smith is a proud Rotarian and a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. Active in the community, he annually visits dozens of school children and makes presentations about the weather. He has spotlighted special young people of the community for over a decade through his “Kids You Should Know” feature. Additionally, he is a regular on the civic organization speaking circuit.
Smith works as vice president of the Storm Science Network, where he merges hands-on science activities for children all across the Valley. Further, he works as the co-founder of the annual National Tropical Weather Conference on South Padre Island.
Smith was a previous member and Chairman of the Board of the International Museum of Art and Science in McAllen. Additionally, he has worked on the Rio Grande Valley Emergency Management Coordinating Council, the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross, the Hidalgo County Fatherhood Initiative, the Rio Grande Valley Partnership, and the UTPA Nursing Advisory Council.
