Wayne Covil Biography
Wayne Covil is an eminent American Journalist working for WTVR TV as a Senior Reporter. He joined WTVR TV on December 1, 1992. Since 1992, he has been an active member of the community and has served on various boards and commissions. He is a past member of the Tri-Cities Salvation Army Advisory Board and past secretary of the Colonial Heights Local Emergency Planning Committee. Moreover, he is a former member of the Public Information and Educational Committee, a sub-committee to the Commonwealth’s Emergency Services Advisory Board.
Also, he serves as a “Non-Profit Auctioneer” for various charities in our area including the Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Christmas Mother Auction, Tidewater Academy Auction, Richmond Friends of the Homeless Auction, and Crater Hospice Auction. Because of his exemplary in his job, he was four times named “News Employee of the Month” and was the 1994 News Employee of the Year. He went on to win a Virginia Associated Press Award in 1994 for his year-long reports on the 1993 Tri-Cities Tornado and its aftermath. Moreover, he has been nominated multiple times for Regional Emmy Awards.

He received his education at Campbell University from 1982 to 1987 where he graduated with a BBA in Business. During his senior year, he was an assistant news director of WCCE – FM 90.1 Campus Radio Station. Also, he did fundraising for the station. Staring in his freshman year January 1983, he was a proud member of the Buies Creek Volunteer Fire Department until shortly after graduation.

There, he is a one-man band reporter/photographer (MMJ) working out of the main TV station in Richmond, Virginia. He covers all of Central Virginia and the Tri-Cities area (Petersburg, Colonial Heights, Hopewell, Prince George County, and Dinwiddie County), shooting, writing, and editing all his stories. At the station, he is a former announcer at Virginia Motorsports Park, NHRA Drag Strip in Dinwiddie County, Virginia.
In July 2001, he became a Senior Producer for the South’s First TV Station. He went on and began his franchise series, Wayne’s World in 2019 which airs Wednesday Nights at 11 pm. From April 1989 to November 1992, he was a Jacksonville Bureau Chief at WNCT-TV 9. Prior to that, he was an Assistant News Director at WJNC – AM 1240 from August 1987 to April 1989. In his spare time, he spent several years as the Track Announcer for Virginia Motorsports Park, the premiere Drag Racing Facility in the Commonwealth. He enjoys the shooting sports of “Skeet” and “Sporting Clays” in his off time.
