Alan has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in meteorology from Cornell University and Florida State University, respectively, as well as professional certifications from the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and the National Weather Association (NWA). Alan worked as a meteorologist at an NBC TV station in Chicago before moving to Mobile in 1999. Prior to that, he worked for 5 years at Chicago’s WGN-TV. He was a meteorology professor at Columbia College in Chicago at the time. Alan worked as a meteorologist at WTMJ-TV & Radio in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from 1988 to 1992.

His career began at WALB-TV in Albany, Georgia. Each spring, Alan continues to teach weather broadcasting at the University of South Alabama. He has also written and produced four dozen weather videos that have been used by educators all over the world. His work, including weather photographs, has been used in research and college textbooks.

Alan has received eleven Emmy nominations. He was named “Best Weather Anchor” by the Alabama Associated Press Broadcasters Association four times, and he was named “Best Weathercaster in the State” by the Alabama Broadcasters Association twice. Alan also received a best-in-state award for his documentary on Hurricane Ivan. Alan received an award from the American Meteorological Society for excellence in science reporting for a three-part series he produced on climate change.

During Hurricane Irma in 2017, Reddit users voted him “Best Weatherman Ever” after one of his weather segments went viral on social media. Alan was voted Best Meteorologist in Mobile by Lagniappe newspaper readers six years in a row. Alan received the AMS Award for Broadcast Meteorology in 2019 for a career of science education to the public and his peers. Alan has also received a number of community service awards in recent years. He has been recognized as a meteorology trailblazer.

Alan reaches thousands of children each year through dozens of school visits, showcasing science and promoting excellence.
