Chris O’Connell Biography
Chris O’Connell is an American Anchor & General Assignment Reporter working for FOX 29 Philadelphia since joining the station in September 2010. Additionally, he co-anchors the Friday evening newscasts.
Chris O’Connell Career
After spending two decades reporting for TV news outlets around the country, O’Connell moved back home to Philadelphia from Minnesota, where he was an anchor and reporter for KSTP in St. Paul. Before that, O’Connell was a sports anchor and reporter for a decade at Bay News 9 in Tampa, Florida, where he as well he hosted a half-hour nightly sports talk show.
O’Connell sharpened his reporting skills with stints at WTVR in Richmond, VA, where he was bureau chief and reporter for two years; WAMU-FM radio in Washington, D.C.; and WGAL and WLYH in Lancaster, PA. Besides an Emmy Award for Outstanding General Assignment Reporting, O’Connell has been honored by the Society of Professional Journalists and Associated Press for his reporting work throughout his career.
He graduated from Temple University in Philadelphia. Worked at WRTI-FM while completing his bachelor’s degree in radio-television-film. He finished a semester overseas in London, working at the ABC News bureau. O’Connell grew up in Wallingford, Delaware County, PA, and went to Strath Haven High School.
O’Connell is very entailed with The Friends of Alexander Deihl Foundation, a charity helping families of terminally ill children founded in honor of Chris’ “Superman” nephew, who suffers from the rare disease, Menke’s Syndrome. He as well serves on the Board of Directors for the Epilepsy Foundation of Eastern Pennsylvania. O’Connell’s “career highlight” came in February 2018 when he traveled to Minneapolis to cover the Eagle’s victory in Super Bowl LVII.
