Darren Maier Biography

Darren Maier is an American meteorologist working at WEAU where he serves as the chief meteorologist He joined the station in March of 2011, after previously working at WLIO-TV where he was also a chief meteorologist.

He has almost 20 years of broadcast experience with, over 25 years as a professional meteorologist. New Britain, Connecticut is his native home, and for the better part of his life, he has resided in New England. Maier’s love for weather began at a young age as he saw a number of extreme weather events in New England from nor’easters to hurricanes.

In 1987, he joined Central Connecticut State University where he graduated in 2005, with a Bachelor of Science in atmospheric science and meteorology. Later on, the American Meteorological Society awarded him with the prestigious CBM certification (#363) in 2009. The certificate recognizes professional broadcast meteorologists for their technical competence and ability to provide informational and explanatory value in their weather forecasts.

Darren also won the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association award in 2018 and 2019, for r best weathercast in small market television. While working in Wisconsin, he covered EF-3 when it tore through Barron County in May of 2017, which was the state’s longest track tornado on record, and in September 2019, EF-3 Wheaton tornado. During his spare time, he enjoys gardening, bike riding, photography, playing tennis, and astronomy.
