Dr. Sanjay Gupta is a multiple Emmy-award-winning neurosurgeon, medical reporter, and writer working at CNN. He has been working at the station since joining in the summer of 2021.

Gupta serves as the Chief medical correspondent at CNN. In this role, he is in charge of making health reports on medical and health news for Starting Point with Anderson Cooper 360° and Soledad O’Brien. He also serves as the anchor of the weekend medical affairs program Sanjay Gupta, MD., and also makes contributions to CNNHealth.com and CNN.com. He has made several medical reports covering health care reform, HIV/AIDS, brain injury, fitness, disaster recovery, and military medicine among other areas.

Gupta reported on the 2011 earthquake- and tsunami that took place in Japan adding context and clarity to the human impact and radiation concerns. In the previous year(2010), he went to Haiti and enclosed the devastating earthquake and won two Emmy Awards for this coverage. He also enclosed the unprecedented flooding in Pakistan in 2010.

On joining CNN, he started off by covering the Sept. 11, 2001, New York attacks. He went to Iraq and Kuwait where he enclosed the 2003 war and later on went to Baghdad. In addition to that, he was part of the network’s 2010 Peabody Award-winning team after enclosing the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

He went to Sri Lanka in 2004 and enclosed the tsunami disaster that killed about 155,000 which earned him a 2005 Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia Award for CNN. Gupta launched “Fit Nation,” which aimed at inspiring Americans to lead more active and healthy lives. He is also an active member of the faculty and staff at the Emory University School of Medicine.

Prior to joining CNN, Gupta was at the Semmes-Murphey Clinic in Tennessee and the University of Michigan Medical Center where he completed separate neurosurgical fellowships. He also made contributions to the CBS news magazine 60 Minutes. In addition to that, he is also the author of his three books called Cheating Death which was released in 2009, Monday Mornings which was released in 2012, and Chasing Life which was released in 2007.

Gupta is also working at Grady Memorial Hospital where he serves as associate chief of neurosurgery. In addition to that, he also has memberships in the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He is also a certified medical investigator and also works at the American Board of Neurosurgery serving as a diplomat. Gupta is also an active member of the Lance Armstrong LiveStrong Foundation.

In 2003, he was awarded the National Press Photographers Association Humanitarian Award. He was also tagged “Journalist of the Year,” by the Atlanta Press Club in 2004.
