Fred Kalil Brain Tumor
Kalil survived a brain tumor in 2000. After experiencing huge headaches and forgetting stories, he got driven from the station where he worked at the time(WXIA) to Piedmont Hospital on an August night in 2000. After tests were conducted, it was determined that he had a brain tumor.
At the hospital, a doctor, Dr. Gary Gropper, voiced that he knew what and where the tumor was and was 98% sure it was benign. Fortunately, the tumor was removed as the doctor had said. After the surgery, he had a long road to recovery. He had to relearn everything as he couldn’t do things such as talk. After three months, he returned on air.
Additionally, he had a brain tumor support group. Due to medication that prevents seizures, his memory got affected. Thus, his broadcasting job became hard. While at 11Alive, he had trouble reading the teleprompter. 13 years after his surgery, he took time off-air and at the anchor desk.
