Thomas attended Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School where he studied between 1980 and 1984. From there, he went on to join Universitat Konstanz where he studied between 1986 and 1987. The year 2014 saw him win the Gabriel Award given out by the Catholic Academy of Communication Professionals for feature reporting in the top 25 markets. Asides from this, he has won more than a dozen regional awards for his reporting and photography, which include seven Emmy Awards.
