Ian Lee Biography

Ian Lee is an American Emmy Award-winning correspondent, video producer, and reporter working for CBS News. He joined CBS News in March 2019. Previously he worked for CNN News.

Ian Lee Education

After graduating from high school and earning his Diploma, he had to further his education. He joined the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University to pursue his career course. In 2007, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism, along with certificates in Islamic Studies and Arabic. He is also a proud Eagle Scout and Wyomingite.

He was accepted into an internship program funded by the Carnegie-Knight Carnegie-Knight Initiative on the Future of Journalism Education a. In 2008, Lee received a Fulbright scholarship, among 12 Arizona State University graduates selected for a Fulbright. He spent a year at American University in Cairo, Egypt, studying the reporting differences between newspapers written in English and those written in Arabic. He also attended King’s College London where he earned a a Master’s degree in War Studies in 2022.

Lee is a CBS News correspondent based in London. He reports for CBS News, CBS Newspath, and CBSN covering major international stories. His work has earned him some of journalism’s top honors, including the Investigative Reporters and Editors’ Tom Renner award, an Emmy, and a Peabody. He has reported extensively across East Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

Prior to joining the CBS News team, he worked for CNN as a correspondent based in Jerusalem. During his time joining CNN, he was living in Egypt. While there, he covered the country’s uprising and subsequent 2013 coup. In addition to that, he reported on the civil wars in Libya and Syria and covered both sides of those conflicts. Unfortunately, he was injured as rebels battled for control of Sirte in 2011, the last stronghold of Libyan leader Muammar Al Gaddafi, when an RPG exploded next to him, killing a nearby paramedic.

Lee covered the seven-week war in Gaza in 2014. He followed the 2016 failed coup attempt, entering Turkey as the first foreign journalist.  His journalism career has taken him to London to cover the tensions on the Korean peninsula and terror attacks. After some time, he relocated to Jerusalem in 2017 for CNN to cover news in Israel and Palestinian territories. His work there included exclusive reports with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), Palestinian Security Forces, and Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

He was the first journalist to receive access from the IDF to cross bordering Hezbollah tunnels, entering Israel from Lebanon. He was also given rare access by PIJ to tunnels and weapons used to attack Israel. Prior to joining the CNN team, he worked as a multimedia reporter for “The Daily News Egypt,” a local Egyptian newspaper. While there, he covered the events leading up to the Arab Spring. In the course of that time, he worked for Time magazine as a freelance video journalist. Furthermore, he spent a year as a producer for Reuters.
