Jim Axelrod Biography

Jim Axelrod is an American Emmy award-winning Chief Investigative Correspondent, reporter, and anchor working for CBS News. He joined the station in 1996 as a Senior National Correspondent. Axelrod reports across all CBS News programs and platforms.

After graduating from Highland Park high school and earning his High School Diploma in General Education, he had to further his education. He joined Cornell University and in 1985, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History. Axelrod also attended Brown University where he majored in History. After completing his studies there, he obtained his Master of Arts degree in 1989.

Axelrod joined CBS News as a Miami-based correspondent. Later, he worked in the Dallas Bureau from 1997 to 1999 and New York Bureau from 1999 to 2006. In addition to that, he served as a chief White House correspondent for CBS News from 2006 to 2009. In 2009, he was named a CBS News national correspondent. Axelrod was the anchor of the Saturday edition of “CBS Evening News” from 2012-2016. Currently, he serves as a chief investigative and senior national correspondent for CBS News.

Her journalism career began in Bangor, ME. During his working time there, she worked at WVII-TV. Prior to joining the CBS News team, he worked at WRAL-TV in Raleigh, North Carolina. While there, he served as a general assignment and political reporter. He also worked for WUTR-TV Utica, NY, and WSTM-TV Syracuse, NY. He was the first TV reporter to broadcast live from Saddam International Airport after its takeover by American forces. Axelrod also was one of CBS News’ embedded correspondents in Iraq.

During his tenure at CBS News, he has covered a wide range of domestic and international stories including the American invasion of Afghanistan and the war in Iraq. He was the first television reporter to report live from Baghdad’s Saddam International Airport immediately after it fell to U.S. troops in 2003. Axelrod also covered the live report of the U.S. Army firing artillery rounds into Iraqi positions and was the first to be broadcasted by a reporter embedded with ground troops engaged in combat in Iraq. In addition to that, he was the last reporter to leave with the military in December 2011 and covered the departure of U.S. troops from Iraq.

Prior to joining the CBS News team, he worked for WRAL-TV in Raleigh, North Carolina. While there, he served the station as a political reporter from 1993 to 1996. Before that, he worked for WSTM-TV Syracuse, New York from 1990 to 1993 and at WUTR-TV Utica, New York from 1989 to 1990 as a reporter. His journalism career job began in 1989 in Bangor, Maine where he worked for WVII-TV.
