He witnessed the passion Oklahomans have for helping each other in their darkest hour, when a tornado had just made landfall in Woodward, in his first week on the job in 2012. Volunteers, who had traveled for hours, worked sleeplessly to assist those who lost everything.
Torp and his photojournalist backpacked to Moore on May 20, 2013, to deliver some of the first live reports, moments after a fatal EF5 tornado tore through the area. He received a Heartland Emmy Award for his role in News 9’s nonstop coverage of the crisis.
Torp enjoys telling Oklahoma’s special stories. Red Dirt Diaries, his Emmy-nominated series, features a mix of colorful, courageous, and quirky characters. He is also a sports junlkie who enjoys thinking of exchanges that would help the Oklahoma City Thunder win a World Championship, even though he has a limited knowledge of salary caps and luxury taxes.
