Kathy Orr Biography

Kathy Orr is an American Emmy Award-Winning Meteorologist / Weather Anchor working for FOX 29 since joining the station in September 2015. Before joining FOX 29, she provided forecasts on weekdays on CBS 3’s Eyewitness News at 5, 6, and 11 p.m., and also for The CW Philly at 10 p.m.  In addition to that, Orr provided forecasts for 94 WIP, CBS 3’s sister radio stations, and KYW News radio.

Kathy Orr Career

In 1998, Orr arrived in Philadelphia as the first female meteorologist in the Philadelphia television market. She was named “Rookie of the Year” by the Delaware County Times in 1999. Her reporting and forecasting earned her eight Mid-Atlantic Emmy Awards for “Best Weathercaster.” In addition to that, she earned top honors from the Pennsylvania Associated Press Broadcasters Association and was named “Best Weathercaster” in Philadelphia Magazine’s “Best of Philly” issue in 2008. In 2013, Orr was initiated into the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia’s “Hall of Fame.”

Her career highlights comprise of broadcasting live from the cockpit of a hurricane hunter aircraft while flying through Hurricane Ivan in 2004; working as the official meteorologist of the Philadelphia Eagles and broadcasting live from the 2008 World Series and 2005 Super Bowl. Orr provided weather updates and commentary for XM Radio, CBS Radio, ESPN Radio, Sports Illustrated.com, and CBS Radio.

Orr is a previous board member of the American Meteorological Society’s Board of Broadcast Meteorology. She picked out candidates to receive the coveted AMS seal. She is also a mentor for the American Meteorological Society’s DataStream Project. For nearly a decade she has educated teachers in the field of Meteorology so it can be added to the curriculum in local schools. She earned a B.S. in Broadcast Journalism and Marketing from Syracuse University and a B.S. in Meteorology from the State University of New York at Oswego. Orr holds the AMS, CBM, and NWA Certifications in Meteorology.

Orr was recognized by the New Jersey Governor’s Office for her “Orr at the Shore” series of summer reports that highlighted environmental awareness along the Jersey Shore in 2003. Since Orr’s family vacation “down the shore” for more than 30 years, the Jersey shore is an issue dear to her heart. Orr lives in South Jersey with her family.
