Ken Rice is an American journalist working for KDKA CBS Pittsburgh as a co-anchor of the weeknight editions of KDKA News at 5 since 1995 and KDKA News at 11 since 1999. Also, he co-hosts KDKA’s Sunday morning public affairs show, The KD/PG Sunday Edition. Previously, he served WTAE as a reporter and anchor for 6 years.

Prior to joining KDKA, he spent six years reporting and anchoring for WTAE-TV launching its 5 p.m., newscast in 1992 alongside Sally Wiggin. He began his journalism career while attending the University of Wisconsin in Madison where he reported and anchored news on the statewide Wisconsin Public Radio network. From there, he moved into television, reporting for Madison’s WISC-TV and eventually anchoring its evening newscasts.
As a reporter, his assignments have taken him from the eye of Hurricane Hugo to the White House. He has also reported from the scene when a US Air Flight 427 crashed in 1994 on approach to Pittsburgh. Rice is one of the few local journalists ever to report live on the “CBS Evening News” – in the tense hours after a shooting spree in 2000 in Pittsburgh.
Over the years, he has anchored KDKA’s live broadcast of numerous major breaking stories, significantly the protests at the G-20 Summit, the Quecreek mine rescue in 2002, the police shootings in Stanton Heights in 2009, several Stanley Cup and Super Bowl championship parades, and the disaster at Pitrtsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue in 2018.
Because of his exemplary work, he has been honored with local, state, and national journalism awards. This includes a national first-place Associated Press award for an investigation called Harrisburg Paydirt, which exposed Pennsylvania legislator’s lucrative, taxpayer-funded perks.
Other notable honors include Golden Quill awards from the Pittsburgh Press Club and awards from the Radio-Television News Directors Association for Investigative reporting. His favorite recurring assignment comes every October at Pittsburgh’s Byham Theatre where he works as an emcee. Also, he delivers a monologue at the yearly production of Off the Record, a musical that features local journalists and actors teasing the city’s movers and shakers, all to help local charitable activities.
Rice is an active member of the community and taught and developed a TV news reporting course at Point Park University. Frequently, he speaks at local schools and community institutions. Moreover, he was a board member of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. He has served as Honorary Chair of Pittsburgh’s annual MS Walk for a long time. Also, he worked as the chair of the advisory board of the Pittsburgh Cares volunteer service organization and is a member of the advisory board of the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council. In 2007, he received the Hunger Awareness Day Award from the Food Bank for his contributions.
