Larry Smith is an American Emmy award-winning anchor, correspondent, and reporter currently working at LEX 18. Smith joined the station in December 2020 serving as an evening anchor alongside Angie Beavin and Nancy Cox.
Larry Smith Career
He is thrilled to call Bluegrass his home. After a lengthy broadcast journalism career in major markets and networks, he landed at Lex 18. He started his career while in college at WMCI-FM and WLBH-FM in his hometown Mattoon, Illinois. Thereafter, he launched his on-air job at WICD in Champaign, Illinois. After a short period of time there, he served at WPTV in West Palm Beach and WBIR in Knoxville prior to starting a job at CNN as a correspondent and sports anchor.
Six Super Bowls, a dozen Final Fours, and four Olympics are championships among more than 60 major championships worldwide he has reported based in Atlanta. He also worked as a regular host for NBA TV’s “Gametime” for Turner Sports and Major League Baseball playoff reports.
In 1994, he guided the CNN reports of the end of Major League Baseball’s players to strike. He was also the Michael Vick saga network’s lead correspondent. Michael Phelps was first interviewed by him after winning a record eight gold medals in Beijing during the Summer Olympics.
He left CNN to anchor the news WJLA in Washington, D.C, WCPO in Cincinnati, and WGCL in Atlanta. In the course of his time there, he reported the presidential inauguration in 2017. His coverage on the opening of the Smithsonian Museum of African-American History and Culture helped him to win a Regional Emmy Award.
He has been a play-by-play announcer or Georgia Public Broadcasting reports of the Georgia High School basketball and football championships since 2013.

His coverage of Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath made him receive a Peabody Award and Distinguished Alumni Award from Eastern Illinois University and Lake Land College.
During his free time, he likes bowling as well as touring museums with his children at wife. In addition, he is a devoted golfer who one day hit a hole-in-one at a friend’s wedding.
