Larry Smith is an American Emmy award-winning anchor/reporter working at LEX 18 where he serves as an evening anchor alongside Nancy Cox and Angie Beavin. He joined LEX 18 in December 2020, after previously working at GPB Sports where he served as a freelance play-by-play announcer and color commentator.                   

Larry Smith Career

Smith serves at LEX 18 as an evening news anchor. He started his career during his college years at radio stations WMCI-FM and WLBH-FM in Mattoon, Illinois. Not long after, his television career began at WICD in Champaign, Illinois, and later on, he worked at WBIR in Knoxville and WPTV in West Palm Beach. Larry later secured a job at CNN where he served as a correspondent and sports anchor.

While he worked in Atlanta, he covered over 60 major championships worldwide inclusive of four Olympics, six Super Bowls, and many Final Fours. In addition, he has also served as a regular host for Gametime on NBA TV and host for Major League Baseball playoff coverage.

In 1994, he led NN’s coverage of the end of Major League Baseball’s players’ strike. He also served as the correspondent for the Michael Vick saga and became the first to interview Michael Phelps after he won record eight gold medals at the Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Later on, he worked at WJLA in Washington, D.C., WGCL in Atlanta, and WCPO in Cincinnati. While he worked at WJLA in Washington, D.C., he won a Regional Emmy for his reporting on the opening of the Smithsonian Museum of African-American History and Culture and covered the 2017 presidential inauguration.

Furthermore, he has been serving as a play-by-play announcer for Georgia Public Broadcasting’s coverage of the basketball championships and Georgia High School football since 2013. Further, for his reporting on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, he was awarded a Peabody Award. The Lake Land College and Eastern Illinois University awarded him with the Distinguished Alumni Award. During his leisure time, he enjoys golf, bowling, touring museums, and spending ample time with his wife.
