Major Garrett is an American correspondent, reporter, and host working for CBS News serving as a Chief Washington Correspondent. He is also the host of The Takeout podcast and was a correspondent for National Journal.

After graduating from James Madison High School and earning his Diploma in General Education, he had to further his education. He joined the University of Missouri to pursue his career course. In 1984, he completed his studies there and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism and political science. In addition, he is a member of Phi Gamma Delta.

In December 2018, he was named CBS News’ chief Washington correspondent. He reports for all CBS News broadcasts and platforms. In addition to that, he is the host of “The Takeout,” a weekly multi-platform interview show on pop culture, policy, and politics available on CBS News Streaming, all podcast platforms, and top radio stations across the country.

He served as the Network’s chief White House correspondent from 2012 until 2018. During his time covering the White House, he reported extensively on U.S.-European efforts to confront Russia in the standoff over Ukraine, Ebola, nuclear negotiations with Iran, and presidential actions to confront ISIS.

While covering domestic issues, he reported on the president’s ongoing efforts in 2014 to address racial strife and criminal justice reform, numerous policy failures at the Veterans Administration, and the Obama administration’s handling of the healthcare website rollout. In addition, he has traveled with the president to the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.

He also spent 16 months on the road covering the Republican presidential campaign in 2015 and 2016including every day of the general election, both major party conventions, and every GOP debate. He has covered every major domestic and foreign policy story of the Trump administration. During the transition, he broke numerous cabinet appointments, including Jeff Sessions as attorney general.

Prior to joining the CBS News team, he worked as a chief White House correspondent. During CBS News’ coverage of Campaign 2012 through a partnership with the National Journal, he was a fixture, chief White House correspondent. Garrett alongside “CBS Evening News” anchor and managing editor Scott Pelley co-hosted the network’s coverage of the 2011 South Carolina Republican Primary debate and offered analysis for every 2012 general election presidential debate.

He was the chief White House correspondent for Fox News prior to National Journal. Garrett worked there for eight years and covered the war in Iraq, Congress, and two presidential elections among other major stories. Prior to working for FOX News, he served at CNN as a White House correspondent during the administrations of George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

Before that, he worked for U.S. News and World Report as a senior editor and congressional correspondent. During his time there, he reported on Congress and the impeachment of President Clinton. From 1990 to 1995, he was a congressional reporter for The Washington Times, and from 1995 to 1997, he was the newspaper’s deputy national editor. Earlier in his career, he was a reporter for the Amarillo Globe-News, Las Vegas Review-Journal, and The Houston Post.
