Marcus Washington is an American Anchor/Reporter working for NBC Bay Area in San Francisco where he serves the station as a Morning and Midday News Anchor. He has been working with the station since July 2017.

Washington is a proud graduate of The University of Memphis where he obtained a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Broadcast Journalism. While there, he was a member of the Black Student Association and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He was also a member of the University of Memphis Chapter and to date a member of the National Association of Black Journalists.

Washington works with NBC Bay Area News where he serves the station as a co-anchor for “Today In The Bay Morning News” from 4:30-AM – & AM News and the NBC Bay Area’s Race in America: The Conversation alongside Jessica Aguirre. This show explores racial equity and social injustice and also attempts to bridge the divide between backgrounds and generations.
Prior to joining the NBC Bay Area News team, he was serving WJZ(CBS) in Baltimore, Maryland as an anchor and reporter. While he was in “Charm City” he covered a wide range of stories but his life and approach to reporting were most deeply impacted by Freddie Gray’s death and its aftermath. During Gray’s funeral, explosive unrest in the city, community rebuilding, and the political fallout. During that time, Marcus was there reporting live from the front lines and continued the months following.
The Baltimore Sun writer, David Zurawik, wrote that Marcus Washington again did solid and authoritative reporting for WJZ from Penn and North avenues, the epicenter of protests following the funeral of Gray the last years. Through his careful and caring coverage of the unrest, he earned an Emmy nomination.
He states that his dreams of becoming a news reporter and anchor came early for him. Marcus states that he still remembers sitting in his living room at the age of 5 and telling his mom he wanted to do that. This was while referring to the work of veteran Memphis journalist Joe Birch. His career in media began when he was a student at the University of Memphis. This was after inquiring about reading news for Memphis’ WUMR-FM morning show.
During his third day of orientation, he received an invitation from the station manager to fill in to host Thursday’s 4-7 PM slot. Just five-minutes on-air, the station was impressed with his voice and personality that he walked into the DJ booth and told Marcus, from then on, that was his slot.” Since that time, he became one of the hosts of Memphis’ only jazz station.
Later on, he went on to become an associate producer in Memphis, Tennessee. From then on, he went on to become a reporter in Nashville, Tennessee; Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Charleston, Virginia. This was before his time in Baltimore. He states that he has been acknowledged by outlets like the Baltimore Sun and the Washington Post for his reporting.
Asides from this, he is flattered and amused to be named one of “Nashville’s 25 Most Beautiful People” (per Lifestyles Magazines in 2011) and number fourteen among “The 50 Hottest Anchors in the World” according to Buzzfeed.com in the year 2017.” Washington happens to be a member of the Church of Christ, The National Association of Black Journalists, Incorporated, and the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. He states that he is excited to explore the Bay Area and all the great treasures, most especially the music, community, and food it has to offer.
