Matt McCune Biography
Matt McCune is an American meteorologist and storm chaser currently working at KWCH 12 Eyewitness News. She joined KWCH 12 in December 2008.
Matt McCune Career
McCune is a farmer and sales agronomist who lives in Plainville, Ks. She has been chasing storms since 2003. Her passion for weather started while she was growing up on the farm. She said that rain is a gift from God and we always enjoyed watching it rain. In the early 2000s, she together with her father had watched a number of tornados in Rooks and Ellis County as observers. Then, the passion for storm chasing was lit.
She has chased tornados in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, and Minnesota. She has been featured on many local and national news stations including The Weather Channel, ABC, CBS, CNN, Good Morning America, NBC, FOX, KWCH, WIBW, KETV, and KSNB. Her favorite chase was the Abilene/Chapman tornado on May 25, 2016.
KWCH-DT, virtual channel 12 (UHF digital channel 19), is a CBS-affiliated television station licensed to Hutchinson that broadcasts in Wichita, Kansas. Gray Television owns the station as part of a duopoly alongside CW affiliate KSCW-DT in Wichita (channel 33). KWCH-transmitter DT’s is in rural northeastern Reno County, and the two stations share studios on 37th Street in northeast Wichita (on the town limits of Hutchinson).
KWCH-DT is the flagship station of the Kansas Broadcasting System (KBS), a statewide network of four full-power stations that broadcast KWCH’s CBS network and another programming throughout central and western Kansas, as well as neighboring counties in Colorado, Nebraska, and Oklahoma.

On a 90+ minute chase that produced a LARGE EF4 (some would argue EF5) tornado, they were there from wall cloud to rope out. We were able to stay ahead of the tornado and photograph it as it passed over Solomon, Niles, Abilene, and Chapman. With live footage and video streams, we were highlighted on a national level.
