Michael Holmes is an American award-winning correspondent and anchor working at CNN. He has been working at the station since joining in 1996.

Holmes serves as a correspondent and anchor of the morning newscasts from Friday to Monday at 12 and 3 am ET (5-8 am GMT) at CNN International in Atlanta. He began his journalism career at CNN serving as an anchor based in Australia and reporting from other countries including Nepal, the Middle East, Asia, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, and Mexico. Since joining CNN, he enclosed the Central American migrant crisis in Mexico on the deaths of a man and his daughter from El Salvador whose bodies were found on the banks of the Rio Grande. His most recent assignments included enclosing the deadly protests, the fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, and the Israeli elections.
Holmes also enclosed other conflicting stories in several countries including Afghanistan, Iraq, the West Bank, Libya, and Gaza. He also made reports of the occupation and insurgency to the trial and execution of Saddam Hussein. In addition to that, he survived the January 2004 ambush on a two-vehicle CNN convoy which lead to the deaths of two CNN staff members and one ended up wounded.
In early 2016, he spent some weeks in Iraq enclosing the Iraqi-led offensive to recapture Mosul from ISIS. Due to this report, CNN was awarded a 2016 Peabody Award. He, later on, went to Brussels in March 2016 and enclosed the deadly terror attacks which occurred at the Maelbeek metro and Zaventem airport station. He also spent several days covering Belgium’s response to these ISIS attacks and also interviewing Belgian jihadist Hicham Chaib.
In the previous year(2015), he enclosed the network’s coverage of the terrorist attacks in Paris and lead the network to receive a 2016 Royal Television Society (RTS) Award for ‘Best Breaking News Coverage. He also went to Kyiv, Ukraine, and enclosed the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In addition to that, he was also enclosed the Libyan revolution which caused the toppling of Moammar Gadhafi. He also went to Afghanistan and spent weeks with Afghan and U.S. troops on the battlefield.
In April 2002, he went to Ramallah and covered the Israeli incursion and also held an exclusive interview with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. Holmes has also enclosed other catastrophic and destructive weather events including Hurricanes Michael, Sandy, Maria, and Irma, and also won an Edward R. Murrow Award.

Prior to Holmes joining CNN, he previously worked for Australia’s Nine Network where he enclosed the 1994 Rwandan genocide. He was based in London for about four years as a correspondent and enclosed the first Palestinian intifada, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the start of the first Gulf War, and northern Ireland. He also won an Australian Television Society Award for enclosing Bucharest during the miners’ uprising in 1990.
Holmes started his journalism career in 1982 working at the Nine Network in Perth where he worked for about five years. In addition to that, he worked at other British media outlets, including The Observer newspaper, WTN, and TV-AM. At the age of 17, he worked at the Daily News, an afternoon newspaper in Perth where he served as a cub reporter.
