Michael Schwanke Biography

Michael Schwanke is an American anchor and assistant news director working at KWCH 12 where he serves as a 5, 6, 6;30, and 10 pm anchor in addition to being a factfinder 12 investigator. He joined KWCH 12 in January 2000. 

Michael started his broadcasting career at KBSD in Dodge City where he served as an anchor and reporter. In December 2000, he relocated to Wichita and joined KWCH as a general assignment reporter. While working at the station, he held many positions such as serving as a weekend anchor and covering the crime and education beats. He has won two Emmy awards and a number of there awards such as the national Edward R. Murrow for his consistent coverage of the Carr brothers’ murder trial.

In addition, for his taking viewers behind the scenes of the Wichita Children’s Home and for his investigative report that exposed abuses at a Wichita dental clinic for children, he was awarded two Emmys and two regional Edward R. Murrow awards. Colby is his native home and he graduated from Fort Hays State University with a bachelor’s degree, in information networking/media studies. Furthermore, he has led in the coverage of a number of the largest events in Kansa for the last 19-plus years while at KWCH including the  Hesston shooting, the BTK serial killer, the Greensburg tornado, the Carr brothers’ murder trial, and the BTK serial killer. In 2017, he was invited to testify as an expert on scams and how to prevent them before a U.S. Senate Committee. During his free time, he enjoys spending ample time with his family.
