Smerconish went to Central Bucks High School West where he graduated and attained his high school diploma. He, later on, joined Pennsylvania Law School University where he attained his B.A. Lehigh University and his Juris Doctor’s Degree. Beasley, a renowned Philadelphia-based courtroom lawyer, who is the namesake of the Temple University Beasley School of Law, for ten years before transitioning to broadcasting as a full-time pursuit. Still, Smerconish is a partner at Kline & Specter’s Philadelphia law practice and is a member of the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Bar.

Smerconish was raised in a Republican household and in 1980 endorsed the failed campaign of his father for the Pennsylvania state legislature. He ran for the state legislature as a law student at Penn Law School, losing the Republican Primary by 419 votes. He was named by President George H.W. Bush to serve in the Bush administration as the Regional Administrator for Philadelphia Area III for Housing and Economic Planning. He broke from the Republican Party in 2008 and voted for Barack Obama for president. He encouraged the GOP to seek “moderation on social issues in order to advance a suburban agenda for the GOP” in order to provide a more moderate agenda for the suburban areas.

In 2010 open, he said that because of the inability to apprehend Osama bin Laden after seven years of fighting, he would vote for Obama. He wrote that he was afraid that bin Laden’s loss would push him into Obama’s camp.  He revealed in a newspaper column on February 21, 2010, that he had quit the Republican Party.
