Mike Clay Career

Clay serves as the weekday afternoon and evening Bay News 9 weather forecaster. Mike’s broadcasting career began in 1978, when he was a junior in high school, at a small radio station in his native Texas. Mike transitioned from radio to television in 1985, landing his first job as a TV weather anchor at KCEN-TV in Waco, Texas. He took over as chief meteorologist at KXAN-TV, the NBC affiliate in Austin, Texas, in 1990. Mike also reported on the weather in Tyler and San Antonio, Texas. In 1995, he was off to the Pacific Northwest as the head of the weather department at Northwest Cable News in Seattle, where he covered snowstorms, earthquakes, and even volcanoes. Mike recalls his most memorable moment at Bay News 9 as the morning of August 13, 2004, when the station correctly predicted Hurricane Charley would stay south of the Tampa Bay area.

Mike studied meteorology at Mississippi State University and also has a telecommunications degree from Central Texas College. In 1995, he received the AMS TV Seal of Approval, which he later upgraded to the AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist Seal. Mike is also a National Weather Association TV and Radio Seal of Approval holder. Mike and his colleague Brian McClure received a Florida Suncoast Emmy and a Florida Associated Press award for Best Weathercast for severe weather coverage in 2010.

Clay was elected to the AMS Broadcasters Board in 2011 for a three-year term beginning in 2012. The Board of Directors bestows the American Meteorological Society’s Certified Broadcast Meteorologist Seal of Approval and establishes standards for TV and radio meteorologists who are members of the American Meteorological Society.
