Mike Hoffman Biography

Mike Hoffman is an American retired meteorologist who is best known for his time at WNDU where he served as the Chief Meteorologist. He joined WNDU-TV based in South Bend, Indiana in May 1994 and retired in December 2021. Before joining WNDU, he worked at WNEM TV5 where he also served as the chief meteorologist.  

Hoffman graduated as Valedictorian of his Delphi Community High School class in 1977 and went on to Purdue University to earn a Bachelor of Science in Atmospheric Sciences in 1981.  Mike began his career in television in 1984 at WSJV, now the Fox affiliate in Michiana. He then spent three years as a meteorologist for WTHR-TV in Indianapolis and six years as the Chief Meteorologist for WNEM-TV in Saginaw, Michigan.

He has had the honor of working for two of his mentors and “heroes,” Bob Gregory in Indianapolis and Dick Addis at WNDU. Mike likes to say, “Not many people are that lucky.” He tapes weather segments for AgDay and US Farm Report, which are broadcast on over 160 stations across the country, in addition to doing the weekday evening weathercasts at WNDU. His weather forecasts have the seal of approval from the American Meteorological Society.

Since his return to Michiana in 1994, Hoffman has served as the 16 News Now Chief Meteorologist. Mike has always enjoyed the weather and has done so since he was a child. His mother used to tell how when he was 2 or 3 years old, he would pull the rocking horse up to the front door just to watch the snowfall. Mike spent much of the night of April 3rd, 1974, listening to a transistor radio broadcast of the massive tornado damage caused by the “Super Outbreak.”

It was a day he’ll never forget, and it’s why he’s so dedicated to warning others about impending severe weather. He did, however, want to try television and return to the Midwest, and the right opportunity presented itself. Camping and hiking, as well as speaking to community organizations and school groups, are some of Mike’s favorite outdoor activities and hobbies. Mike has traveled to Tapachula, Mexico ten times to work with underprivileged children, and he and his wife are active members of the United Methodist Church. Hoffman also enjoys a variety of sports, including volleyball and working out.
