He is a St. Joseph Elementary School, Shasta High School, and California State University, Chico graduate. With the exception of two brief stints with Dignity Health, has been at KRCR-TV since 1978 as a news reporter and anchor, as well as sports director. Mike is deeply committed to the community, having served or is currently serving on the boards of Shasta Community Health Center, the United Way, and the Good News Rescue Mission, as well as Mercy Medical Center Redding, Northern Valley Catholic Social Service, and Shasta County Public Health. It is owned by the Sinclair Broadcast Group and is sister to five low-power stations: Chico-licensed Antenna TV affiliate KXVU-LD (channel 17); MyNetworkTV affiliates Redding-licensed KRVU-LD (channel 21) and Chico-licensed KZVU-LD (channel 22); Chico-licensed Univision affiliate KUCO-LD (channel 27); and Chico-licensed UniMás affiliate KKTF-LD (channel (channel 30). Sinclair also operates the Paradise-licensed Fox affiliate KCVU (channel 20) under a local marketing agreement (LMA) with owner Cunningham Broadcasting.
The stations share studios on Auditorium Drive, east of downtown Redding, and have a news bureau and sales office in Chico. However, Sinclair effectively owns KCVU because the family of deceased group founder Julian Smith owns the majority of Cunningham’s stock. KAEF-TV (channel 23) serves the Eureka market as a semi-satellite of KRCR but airs a separate lineup of syndicated programming. Separate local newscasts, commercial inserts, and legal station identifications are also available.
